Day-by-Day Itinerary
Places to visit every day, with what you’ll be doing.
Day 1 — Arrival: Entebbe & Settlement
Arrival at Entebbe, hotel transfer, and gentle evening birding around botanical gardens and lake edge. Likely species include Great Blue Turaco, Woodland Kingfisher, and Black-headed Weaver. Recommended stay: Papyrus Guest House, Boma Hotel, or Protea Hotel Entebbe.
Day 2 — Mabamba Wetlands
Morning canoe survey in Mabamba for Shoebill and papyrus-associated species. Afternoon species log and photo review back in Entebbe. Recommended stay: Papyrus Guest House or Boma Hotel Entebbe.
Day 3 — Jinja & Nile River Birding
Transfer to Jinja with riverine birding for kingfishers, cormorants, and swallows around Nile viewpoints. Add evening roost checks near riparian trees. Recommended stay: The Haven Eco River Lodge or Jinja Nile Resort area.
Day 4 — Mabira Forest Birding
Morning and afternoon sessions in Mabira for forest specialists, hornbills, and canopy flocks. Dusk listening for owls/nightjars. Recommended stay: Jinja accommodation or eco-lodges near Mabira access.
Day 5 — Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary
Transfer to Ziwa with open-country birding for grassland birds and raptors; optional guided rhino tracking adds mammal value. Night session for nocturnal calls if conditions allow. Recommended stay: Ziwa Rhino Guesthouse or nearby Murchison transit lodges.
Day 6 — Murchison Falls (Top of Falls)
Bird around Top of the Falls and gorge viewpoints for raptors and cliff-associated species, then afternoon photography session in open-country habitats. Mammals possible: giraffe, elephant, and hartebeest. Recommended stay: Pakuba Safari Lodge, Paraa Safari Lodge, or Fort Murchison.
Day 7 — Murchison Falls (Nile/Boat Option)
Nile boat birding for waterbirds and shoreline species, then evening game drive for mammals and sunset raptor watch. Crocodiles and hippos common. Recommended stay: Pakuba Safari Lodge or Paraa Safari Lodge.
Day 8 — Transfer to Kibale (Crater-Landscape Stops)
Long transfer to Kibale with birding pauses in mixed farmland and crater-lake corridors. Evening forest-edge warm-up walk. Recommended stay: Turaco Treetops, Isunga Lodge, or Chimpundu Lodge.
Day 9 — Kibale Forest Trails
Full-day Kibale birding on interior trails for mixed flocks, broadbills, and forest insectivores. Optional primate viewing for red colobus and black-and-white colobus. Recommended stay: Turaco Treetops or Isunga Lodge.
Day 10 — Bigodi Wetland (Swamp Birds)
Bigodi swamp walk with local guide for wetland and edge species, followed by afternoon community bird trails. Great Blue Turaco and kingfishers are frequent highlights. Recommended stay: Chimpundu Lodge or Isunga Lodge.
Day 11 — Semuliki / Rift Forest Zone
Transfer to Semuliki/Rift forest zone to target species less common in Kibale; bird bamboo belts and lowland sections. Evening checklist and route planning. Recommended stay: Semuliki Safari Lodge or nearby forest lodges.
Day 12 — Transfer to Queen Elizabeth
Travel to Queen Elizabeth while birding en route in open savannah and wetland patches. Evening game-viewing drive for mammals and birds. Recommended stay: Elephant Plains Lodge, Buffalo Safari Lodge, or Mweya Safari Lodge.
Day 13 — Kazinga Channel Boat Cruise
Morning boat cruise for skimmers, pelicans, kingfishers, and shoreline specialists; afternoon acacia-track birding for shrikes and weavers. Hippos and elephants frequent the channel edges. Recommended stay: Mweya Safari Lodge or Elephant Plains Lodge.
Day 14 — Kasenyi Plains & Savannah Raptors
Sunrise drive in Kasenyi for bustards, coursers, pipits, and hunting raptors; afternoon hill/woodland edge birding. Mammal highlights often include lion and Uganda kob. Recommended stay: Buffalo Safari Lodge or Elephant Plains Lodge.
Day 15 — Lake Mburo National Park
Transfer to Lake Mburo and bird acacia woodland, lake margins, and open grassland for species turnover. Mammals include zebra, impala, and eland. Recommended stay: Rwakobo Rock, Mburo Safari Lodge, or Mihingo Lodge.
Day 16 — Transfer to Bwindi (Albertine Rift)
Drive to Bwindi with mountain scenery and stopovers, then short late-afternoon forest-edge session. Prepare for high-endemism birding days. Recommended stay: Buhoma Lodge, Mahogany Springs, Bakiga Lodge, or Gorilla Mist Camp.
Day 17 — Bwindi Cloud Forest Birding
Full cloud-forest birding day targeting Albertine Rift endemics and mixed-species flocks. Focus on understorey and canopy windows with guide support. Recommended stay: Buhoma Lodge or Bakiga Lodge.
Day 18 — Bwindi Alternate Forest Zones
Second Bwindi day in a different sector (e.g., Ruhija/Buhoma) for new elevational species and better photo opportunities. Optional cultural village visit in late afternoon. Recommended stay: same lodge for continuity or sector-specific lodge.
Day 19 — Cross to Rwanda: Volcanoes Region
Cross into Rwanda and transfer to Volcanoes region. Evening lodge-garden birding and highland species orientation. Recommended stay: Le Bambou Gorilla Lodge, Da Vinci Gorilla Lodge, or Five Volcanoes Boutique Hotel.
Day 20 — Volcanoes National Park Birding
Guided montane birding in Volcanoes NP focusing on bamboo and highland forest species. Afternoon photography and checklist session. Recommended stay: Le Bambou Gorilla Lodge or Five Volcanoes Boutique Hotel.
Day 21 — Nyungwe (Canopy/Forest Birds) & Departure
Final birding session in Nyungwe-access zone (routing dependent) for canopy and forest specialists, then trip wrap-up and departure transfer. Accommodation may be day-use or final-night based on flight logistics.
